How can I check engine oil level?

Wait three to five minutes so oil drains back into the pan. Checking on a hill gives you a false reading every time. Measure twice and mark clearly in pencil or tape — small errors compound through later stages of check engine oil level, especially where parts are cut to length or drilled in place.
